Hi all,
I'm working on designing a logo, but I need it to float. I came
across this tutorial on gimp.org:
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/The_Basics/
I'm all good until I get to the section "Using the Layer Mask". In
the section just prior, I am able to get my layers dialog box to look
like the one on the page, however in the next section, I have the
"Floating Selection" but I do not have the "JTL" on the middle layer
right picture.
I'm new to graphics, layers, etc., but have played around with The
Gimp and Photoshop a little bit.
Thanks for the help.
Will

Yes your right, the center image with the floating selection and "JTL"
already in the mask is wrong. At that step you should have the floating
selection but the mask would still be white. Also you can't choose to
Merge Down but instead use Anchor to place it into that mask so it then
looks like the 3rd picture.
I looked over the rest of the page and it looks fine but just to clarify:
- "Preserve Transparency (Keep Trans.)" is now a checkbox to the left of
a grey checkboard square and to the right of the Mode: Normal (same
place as the "Preserve Trans." is in the screen shot
- While you can "use the paint tool to make the copy of the logo black"
you can now do it quickly using Edit->Fill with FG Color (once you
change Foreground color to black).
