No, Gaim is supposed to be upwards compatible (for example,
GIMP 2.2 is
compiled with GTK+ 2.4 for some compatiblity functions and
runs with GTK+
2.8 without problems) and should run with GTK+ 2.8.9 as
well.
In general, the huge leaps GTK+ makes, both in features and
lesser bugs per
release, don't justify sticking to older releases when it is
so easy to have
your program run with newer ones.
You should report this to the Gaim people, they should check
whether their
installer can just be updated.
