Well I agree he may not be telling the whole story and may have miss used the account. My advice even now would be to not use Gamil as your primary mail program, after all it is still in beta mode.

Personally, I'm not skeptical.  ;This happened to me about a year ago.
I did eventually manage to get in contact with support. It took me two
months to get to the bottom of it, each correspondence taking at least
1-2 weeks for a response. The final conclusion, after providing
personal details, information on mail in the account, and even the
person who invited me and who I invited – was that it was indeed my
account but "for my protection" it would remain closed.

Perhaps I'm a fool, but I promptly opened a new account and to this
day trust them with my data. I'm still a bit upset and wary – I use
pop3 to download my mailbase each week just in case it happens again.
