Anyone ever come up with a work around for the settings
being gone?

Is there a list of incompatible extensions?

Err.. I suppose incompatible extension is GmailSkins (og Gmail itself) 

Really, it was long since last update of gmailskins, and not so long since update of gmail interface.
* Anyway, extension itself still works. You can try editing gmailskins label in settings to configure it... Not the best way, but only.
