I much prefer to compose a message, THEN pick contacts --
can't find a
way to do this in gmail?? Some contacts have several email
accounts.
I don't want to have to memorize any parts of addresses or
do any
typing in the address box of the message. While type ahead
if fine,
picking from a list seems like an option that would be used
by many
gmailers, Different strokes ... ?

I don't _think_ (I could be wrong) that there's a way to do exactly what you want, sorry. However, you don't have to know part of their address... just start typing their name in the "To:" box and Gmail will pop up a list, which you can then use to either click the correct one or keep typing until it is the top result and press enter.

If you want to be able to select from everyone of you contacts once in an email, you can add a random character to each of your contact's names. For example, add an "+" to the end of every contact's name. Then when you are ready to compose your message, just type "+" and everyone of your contacts will show up. It's not the quickest way, but it works
