go to inbox after deleting, or pressing back button

what bothers me using gmail is that whenever i am cleaning
up my inbox,
i go through my emails and delete a message at a time, but
it takes me
back to the inbox.  the same thing happens if i open an
email
attachment with a picture.  what i would prefer that it does
is take me
back to the previous email (when deleting) or back to my
original
message (when viewing picture attachments) so i can view
other pictures
that may be attached.  it's annoying to have to go find the
email i was
just reading.

other email clients i have used have had that option but i
don't think
it exists in gmail at all.  have i missed it or is it not a
feature
they would put in here?
