Running IE6 SP2 on Win XP. Gmail frequently 'hangs' the
browser when I
click (or shortcut key) to close the browser.
Sometimes I get the 'hourglass' for 3 or 4 minutes, then
it finally
closes itself; at other times, I have to close it from Task
Manager. At
times it displays the 'not responding' on the title bar
but not always.
This has happened on two different computers with similar
configuration. Cable intenet connection with 400kbps
up/2100kbps down.
Tons of RAM, CPU use is generally below 15% total while this
is going
on. Firewall on or off makes no difference.
Any ideas would help.

Well, it sounds like the problem is actually with the browser. Although I'm not sure it will help, perhaps clearing the cache would help some.
Has it always done this or has it been occuring only relatively recently?

unfortuneately, that's not it. My IE is set to dump the
cache everytime
the browser is closed. And
i've tried maunally deleting temp internet pages and
history, but it
still occurs.
Although I can't be sure, it seems to have started about
the same time
as another MS 'insecurity update'.
I'll try using gmail on Netscape or Firefox a few time to
see if it
happens there too.
Thanks.

Yeah, do that... it could be that the update makes IE/some component scan internet connections to watch for "bad stuff." I don't use Windows regularly enough to tell you what might be doing that, unfortunately.
Oh! Do you have Norton (or similar) installed? I remember a while back someone was complaining about Gmail being really slow and we eventually determined that the problem was Norton scanning every single thing being sent and received.

I run Trend Micro anti virus, but the 'hang' occurs not
when mail is
coming in or being read; it only hangs when I try to close
the browser.
Thanks for the idea anyway. Gmail runs pretty fast and
without a lot of
bug except for closing the window. (But I've never had IE
hang like
that when closing on any other pages or mail interface.) So
it is still
a mystery.
I've never run into this with any other IMAP thing. I was
just
wondering if other people had run into similar problems, or
if it was
just my machines doing it.
Thanks
