What you didn't understand was basically him giving the
reason for why
the "Sender" field is necessary... it helps ensure
you're not blocked
as being a spammer who is trying to spoof.

Oh I get it now. Gmail is sending the mail which says it's
from a
different address *from gmail's servers*. I thought Gmail
logged into
the other account's servers and sent it from there. (That's
probably
what it *should* do.)
And when the from field is another Gmail address, it's not
necessary to
show the sender for this purpose.

Part of the issue here is preventing SPAMMERS from
exploiting GMAIL?
Note that your IP address never shows up in a GMAIL header,
so GMAIL
must
disclose the originating account... to allow messages to be
traced
back?

Which is better than showing the IP. IPs are so transient,
and can
easily be faked, it's not a reliable method to determine WHO
was
involved... the IP can jump from one person to another just
by
clicking DHCP refresh.

I agree that it is some use, but performing a DHCP refresh
is quite
unlikely to give you a new IP on any but the most poorly
designed
networks.

Omegatron, this has been an ongoing complaint, but once
users
understand the intent, it makes sense (which it does to you
now.)
The reality is that Gmail is simply "following the
rules", providing an
accurate and legitimate audit trail of where a message came
from. Some
people would prefer to have their email APPEAR to come from
another
address without revealing that it was sent by Gmail, while
others would
rather have accurate, reliable addressing. Gmail simply
chose to follow
established rules instead of trying to conceal or alter
messages
keeping both them and their users free of possible issues.
It also
prevents Spammers from using Gmail to easily spoof
addresses.
