Gmail is not responsible for the delivery: everyone is - and
by
everyone, I mean, everyone with a server on this planet
could be. The
key idea behind Internet is that instead of having a central
computer
planning where every file should got to get to the right
person, it is
labeled with the destination, and sent more or less randomly
around,
until it gets there (Geek Squad: excuse my
over-simplification). If the
network is busy, a message could get "lost"
(though no message really
is) and it takes time, simply because there are no
direction. If it
took several hours, your e-mail probably went several times
around the
globe (at the speed of light). This should happen with any
e-mail
provider. This is what that senator from Alaska was
complaining about
in his famous rant.
It could be many other things, and if no one but Gmail users
complain,
it might --- but I can assure you that some messages
traveled faster
that my mouse today.
I'm not sure Pop would help then. For real emergency, use
SMS: it is
officially the fastest way to reach anyone.
