The lables thing SUCK's it could be usefull if we had
folders, I would
like to open the inbox and only have new mail in there I
don't care
about why you think it better as it is not.
I should be the one to decide how I want to organize my mail
not
conform to your ideas.

Then don't use GMail.

Sorry this is long-winded, but I think that you simply don't
understand
how to effectively use Labels and manage your Inbox using
Labels and
the Archive function. Labels can be very easily used to
mimic Folders
in Gmail--you just have to understand how to make it work.
And it
really isn't that difficult!
When you receive email into your Inbox in a Folder-based
client, what
would you normally do? You would typically "move"
the message from your
Inbox to a folder using whatever method the client provides.
The
message is no longer in your Inbox, it is now in a Folder.
With Gmail, you can do the exact same thing using Labels and
the
"Archive" button. Simply click the checkbox next
to message or multiple
messages in your Inbox, click the "More
actions..." dropdown and click
on an appropriate Label to assign a Label to the message.
(Create a new
one if you don't have an appropriate one created.) In your
Inbox, the
message is still there, but it now has a Label next to the
message
title. The message should already be selected, so now just
click the
"Archive" button, and the message disappears. It's
gone from the Inbox,
and is now accessible three ways:
1. The Label "view" on the left.
Just click the name of the Label you applied to the message,
and that
message and all messages with that Label will be displayed.
This is
EXACTLY the same look and feel of a Folder-based client.
Except that
the message is not physically in a folder. But from the
user's
perspective, it's really just like using Folders.
2. The "All Mail" view on the left.
Click this, and it will display ALL email you have (except
Trash and
Spam) in date order. Labels will be next to the message
titles. If you
have thousands of messages, this can be cumbersome, so other
viewing
methods are more desirable.
3. Search.
You can find the message in various ways using the Search
tool.
You can even set up "Filters" to automatically
apply Labels and
optionally auto-Archive messages as they come in. This is
just like
"rules" in other mail clients that auto-move
messages to folders.
Labels even take things a step further because you can apply
multiple
labels to a message. For example, you could apply both a
"Jokes" Label
and a "Family" Label to a message that contains a
joke sent from your
father. The message would be visible from each view, but it
only
physically exists once. With a Folder-based client, you
would have to
copy the message into two separate folders, maintaining two
copies of
the message.
The only downside to Labels is that they are not
hierarchical--you
can't have "nested" Labels like you can with
Folders.
So the key is to understand that Labels are simply a
categorization
method similar to Folders, just conceptually slightly
different. And
the second key is to understand how Archiving can remove
messages from
the Inbox. Just be aware that if you do not apply a Label
before
Archiving the message, it will only be accessible through
the "All
mail" view, so it's good practice to always apply
Labels.

There are many other free and paid Folder-based email
clients
available, so if Gmail's methodology doesn't suit you, then
I suggest
you look into other email client options.
I found Gmail's methodology to be a bit confusing at first,
but once I
understood how to effectively make things work, I was
hooked, and I
wouldn't go back to any other email client.

Um, then just Archive your read messages. That has nothing to do with labels.
I don't care about why you think it better as it is not. It's good that you have an open mind about new things...
I should be the one to decide how I want to organize my mail not conform to your ideas. You can, if you don't like labels, then don't use GMail. It's as simple as that. Labels are a permanent part of GMail, whether you like them or not and the GMail team will not get rid of them simply because of some stubborn people that refuse to accept new ideas.

"I should be the one to decide how I want to organize

I completely agree with you.
And I think you did a BIG mistake joining GMail, because
labels, to my
understanding, is one of the main stuff here.
Good luck on your search for your ideal e-mail provider.

Most of the replies above explain things well. Given those,
I would
just like to reiterate that labels give you the exact same
functionality as folders, if you limit yourself to one label
per
message. However, you don't have to limit yourself so. You
can apply
an arbitrary number of labels to a message, which would be
like a
folder system that permits you to put a message into that
many folders
(instead of limiting you to one folder, which you might not
remember
the next time you look for that message). IOW, folders are
a subset of
labels.
