I have seen many requests for "nested labels" in
these various
gmail-related forums. I think what would be best is to
emulate a
feature from an existing system which has proven successful.
I think
the del.icio.us feature "tag bundles" is the
closest fit to everybody's
needs to use labels just a little more effectively. Go take
a look at
the feature on their site and then come back.
A lot of suggestions have been along the lines of prefixing
labels to
create nestings or groupings of labels. This does
technically solve the
problem, but you still might have a large list of labels to
deal with,
and each is longer from the prefix.
>From a UI standpoint, here is my suggestion: Allow the
creation of
Label Groups by create a group and then selecting which
labels it
contains. Perhaps, instead of having the collapsible green
box for all
labels, create one of these collapsible boxes for each of my
label
groups. I could even create groups inline along the
left-hand panel and
drag and drop labels between the groups. I would start by
creating
groups "actions", "subjects", and
"people" and drag labels from the
original "Labels" group (or "Ungrouped
labels", just like unlabeled
emails). I think the ability to collapse all but one group
of labels to
deal with at a time could more more than a little useful.
Finally, an added bonus would be the ability to see the
labels in
"cloud" format instead of "list", as
del.icio.us does, arranging the
order of the labels by the "weight" of how many
unread (or total)
messages the label contains.
Sorry if this feature or something similar has been
suggested already.
All I have seen is the request for "nested
labels".
