Peter,

I'm not sure anyone fully understands how Safe Mode works except those well-paid proprietary code writers at Microsoft. All I know is that the person who offers me computer support said that in Safe Mode the operating system only loads a bare minimum of drivers, and that Safe Mode is the environment in which hard-to-solve problems ( e.g., boot sector virus elimination, etc.) can be more fully addressed. Networking is not started, the PC definitely runs slower while in Safe Mode, and most of the resident programs that run in the task bar don't get started either.

Safe Mode was also recommended to me as the environment to be in when running disk error-checking and defragmentation programs, too. I find when my computer behaves unexpectedly, the sequence of shutting it completely down (power off & unplug for 15 seconds), booting up once in Safe Mode, ;shutting completely down again, and booting up again in (Regular Mode) often seems to clear things up. It's part of the Black Magic of computing, I suppose.

I'm not sure I fully understood your description of your actions -- if you go to File and Close, you are shutting down the browser, not Sign(ing) out of Gmail. Abruptly closing the browser like that while Gmail was still open leaves stray cookies and temp files behind that will confuse the program the next time you open the browser and go to www.gmail.com That's why I suggested opening in Safe Mode and blowing away all the temp files once and for all. Who knows, maybe you've got a virus or spyware/adware thingie that's causing the malfunction -- have you checked for that yet, just to be sure?

I hope that helps. "Good luck!"; and let us know how you make out.

Brian

P.S. Have you sent e-mail to Gmail Help with a description of your problem?

thanks for the suggestions. I do delete temp files etc, fairly often.
What does Safe Mode do for me? I'm sorry to ask such basic questions.
What I'd like to know is why this is happening, then the cure would be evident, I think.
If I could sign off properly I would go back to a new sign in screen and could then log into my other google account, but if I close under file I go all the way out and have to re-enter Explorer again, which brings me to google which I have as my home page.
I9;m thinking of reloading google mail, is that a workable idea?
I live out in the country, an hour outside of San Francisco, but if I lived in the city I think I'd have the Computer Geeks make a house call.
Any suggestions you may have are welcome. I wish I knew enough to make a rational plan.

Regards,
Peter

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode and then flushing the browser cache? To get into Safe Mode, press F8 repeatedly while the computer is booting up. Then, assuming you're using Internet Explorer, go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Delete Browsing History / Cookies / etc. (actual wording depends on version of the browser).

If you don't blow away the Temporary Internet Files periodically, there will be thousands of these tiny files and cookies stored on your hard drive.

There is, however, a "Empty Temporary Internet Files after browser is closed" setting you can turn on under Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced that will keep the detritus from building up. You'll lose some performance of caching if you're using a dial-up modem, but chance are you'll benefit overall from the good housekeeping.

Either way, it's definitely better to clcik on Gmail's "Sign out" before shutting down the browser.

Cheers,

Brian

Ryan, I mean the red box with the white X in hte upper right corner, close. I'd rather close out using Sign Out.
I'm using MSN XP Home Edition on a HP Pavilion. This just started happening, but also my response time is a little slower, too.
Any other ideas?

From the "red X box" statement, I'm guessing that you're using MacOS X. Are you using Safari? It's not fully supported, so I would suggest trying Firefox. If you are... does this happen on any other sites?

For the past few days I can't log off gmail, I either have to close
with the red X box or restart my computer.
I tried using the help button but that won't work either.
Once I try to log off I can't do anything else, it's frozen.
I've deleted all temp files and cookies, I don't need to defrag.
Last week I loaded google earth, so today I unloaded it but no change.
