lol, Brian, that's my problem, left clicking on Sign Out does nothing except freeze everything, so I was clicking File and Close, then found right click on Sign Out and Open
.
I tried booting in Safe Mode, cleaning everything out and restarting, closing out again and restarting, it was still not right. I will send a note to google, but then I'll get a reply that has nothing to do with anything, not that I'm cynical or anything.

Peter,
Um, I think just left clicking directly on Sign out should do it, not the right click & open that you did.
Gla d you're making progress, though.

Ah ha!
Brian;
I just right clicked Sign Off and then clicked Open and I got logged off and sent back to the gmail log on screen instead of all the way out. A partial success.

Brian;
thanks for the suggestions. I do delete temp files etc, fairly often.
What does Safe Mode do for me? I'm sorry to ask such basic questions.
What I'd like to know is why this is happening, then the cure would be evident, I think.
If I could sign off properly I would go back to a new sign in screen and could then log into my other google account, but if I close under file I go all the way out and have to re-enter Explorer again, which brings me to google which I have as my home page.
I9;m thinking of reloading google mail, is that a workable idea?
I live out in the country, an hour outside of San Francisco, but if I lived in the city I think I'd have the Computer Geeks make a house call.
Any suggestions you may have are welcome. I wish I knew enough to make a rational plan.
Regards,
Peter

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode and then flushing the browser cache? To get into Safe Mode, press F8 repeatedly while the computer is booting up. Then, assuming you're using Internet Explorer, go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Delete Browsing History / Cookies / etc. (actual wording depends on version of the browser).
If you don't blow away the Temporary Internet Files periodically, there will be thousands of these tiny files and cookies stored on your hard drive.
There is, however, a "Empty Temporary Internet Files after browser is closed" setting you can turn on under Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced that will keep the detritus from building up. You'll lose some performance of caching if you're using a dial-up modem, but chance are you'll benefit overall from the good housekeeping.
Either way, it's definitely better to clcik on Gmail's "Sign out" before shutting down the browser.
Cheers,
Brian

Ryan, I mean the red box with the white X in hte upper right corner, close. I'd rather close out using Sign Out.
I'm using MSN XP Home Edition on a HP Pavilion. This just started happening, but also my response time is a little slower, too.
Any other ideas?

From the "red X box" statement, I'm guessing that you're using MacOS X. Are you using Safari? It's not fully supported, so I would suggest trying Firefox. If you are... does this happen on any other sites?

For the past few days I can't log off gmail, I either have to close with the red X box or restart my computer.
I tried using the help button but that won't work either. Once I try to log off I can't do anything else, it's frozen. I've deleted all temp files and cookies, I don't need to defrag. Last week I loaded google earth, so today I unloaded it but no change.
