What happens when mail is archived in gmail?

I am trying to find a simple way to save my received and sent messages. I desire to save my messages on my harddrive, and I wonder whether archiving my gmail email saves the email on my harddrive. If it does so, what is the file in which the messages are saved in? Thanks for any help that can be given. No matter how you say it, the message remains on the gmail servers. To save the message(s) on your harddrive, activate the POP feature for all mail, following the instructions given you in the gmail Settings webpages. You need to have email handling software on your computer to do this.
