Thread: Draft message sent

Draft message sent

About a week ago I wrote a long letter that I thought better
about
sending after I finished writing it. I left it sitting in my
drafts
folder. Today the person I wrote it to told me she received
my letter.
Immediately I realized the one being talked about but I had
no memory
of sending it. When I checked my gmail, the letter was still
sitting in
my drafts folder. Even if I had hit the wrong button and
somehow sent
it by mistake, then it should have moved into my sent
folder, right?
When a copy of it was sent back to me as a reply, showing me
that it
had in fact been sent sometime late the night previous, that
reply
appeared in my inbox as a letter on its own, not as part of
a
conversation thread including the original email, which
remained in the
drafts folder. I've now discarded all the letters sitting in
my drafts
folder, because it's scary that letters might be sent
without my
knowledge. Of course, it's going to be an overblown type of
letter that
eventually gets sent this way.

Can anyone think of an explanation for how it may have been
sent by
mistake without my realizing it, and why it would stay in
the drafts
folder after being sent. Anyone aware of this happening to
others? Of
course when I say I didn't know I sent it and it somehow was
sent by
mistake it seems to the recipient like I'm playing some
dopey game.

Do you have up-to-date anti-virus on your computer?

Do you leave your computer logged into your gmail account
when you are
away from it?

Could it be possible for someone else to access your
computer either
physically or by hacking?

Have you tried the Help feature of Google to see if you can
get a
conversation started with Google about this subject?
Usually, if you
persist in replying to messages instead of starting new
threads for
help, it is eventually possible to reach a human being
working in the
help group.

I have an anti-virus program on my computer, but it's not
kept
updated. When my computer is on it's always signed into
gmail. No one
else has physical access to my computer. But even if a virus
or
another person or myself drunk, sleepwalking or just stupid,

distracted and clumsy had sent it, then the letter should
move to my
sent folder, not remain in my drafts folder. I haven't
contacted
Google about it. I learned of it just last night, and I
arrived here
because I was searching around trying to discover if this is
something
that just happens sometime. I couldn't find anyone else
mentioning a
similar occurrence.

There has been at least one other report of this:

Maybe you should file a bug report.

Tim,

Other than a virus or other malware or a MAJOR programming glitch on Google';s part, I have no idea how the scenario you described may have happened. But, your e-mail sending mishap prompts me to share a technique I have adopted to prevent human-induced errors similar to this from happening.

Because the "Send" and "Save Now" buttons are so close together on the Gmail compose screen, the opportunity to accidentally Send unfinished mail is extremely high. To prevent such a mistake from happening, I make sure that the "To:" field is addressed to my e-mail address while composing a draft of a message. Only when I have finished my final edits do I Cut and Paste my address from the To: field to the Bcc: field, and then put the intended recipient's address(es) in the To: box. (Blind copying myself on all e-mail is a habit I developed years ago, and serves to put a "postmark" on my mail.) If I ever accidentally click on Send instead of Save Now, the mail is harmlessly sent to me. The same strategy applies to Replies -- I immediately Cut the email addresses out of To: field and place it at the top of the message body until I'm finished, then I Cut and Paste it back before clicking Send.

Another mistake I'm striving very hard not to make (again!) is to accidentally "out" a list of recipients when Sending or Forwarding mail to a list of folks that were supposed to be Bcc:'ed. To prevent that mistake from happening, I have established another habit of only putting my address in the To: field, and then putting the other recipients in the Bcc: field when my reply is finalized. Bcc: is a powerful but dangerous feature of e-mail.

The ability to cause ;miscommunication, embarrassment or harm to relationships with e-mail is infinitely greater than with snail mail -- be careful out there!

Well, I do it a different way ... I just save the mail as
draft with a
blank "To:" address ... I mean, I do not put any
address in that
field ... just leave it blank and save!

Do you have several browser, windows or tabs with Gmail
open, or other
way to access Gmail: Firefox extension, notifiers, etc.?

I have seen copies of certain draft e-mails duplicate when
editing
them in several windows -- with good reason, if you look at
it from
the functionality aspect. It wouldn't resolve the fact that
it was
sent, but could lead to understanding it -- a long e-mail
that meant
apparently a lot, I would assume you were tired when you
finished it.

Re: Draft message sent
user name

I have a gmail notifier, and when I use it to open gmail it
opens in
firefox as a tab within the current window. So there
probably have
been times when I had more than one window or more than one
tab open
to the gmail program.

I know it was sent, because I had a copy of it sent back to
me. And
I'm willing to accept that this resulted from my own
incompetency. In
fact, that I made some boob move is the easiest explanation
to
understand. But however it was sent it shouldn't remain in
my drafts
folder after it was sent. Or if it duplicated in two
windows or tabs,
and I sent one and saved the other, a copy should be in my
sent
folder, and when the reply was sent back that should have
picked up
the original letter to form a conversation thread in my
inbox, but
that didn't happen. So I can't figure out the mechanism
here. Since I
have no memory of sending it, and it stayed in my drafts
folder, it's
difficult to think of a way, however convoluted, that it was
sent by
my action.

There's the one instance that was linked above of someone
else having
it happen to them. Probably user error of some sort.
