Thread: Gmail - Google Account and OpenId as login

I have a suggestion: Google could again be a front runner
implementing
"OpenID" as a Login option (or replace the Google
Account Login
entirely with an Open ID login).

What do you think?

Why would Google want to do this when they already have their own login procedure?

I would have to agree; why would they want to?

To add to this, Google is already has something just like OpenID https://www.google.com/accounts/IssuedAuthSubTokens (to see what sites you have allowed to use your Google ID)
http://code.google.com/apis/accounts/Authentication.html (to see how to set up your site to use Google';s login)

For the same reason that LiveJournal and others do: it's new
and it's
popular. Technically, there's not a great deal of ration to
support
it... yet.

I'm sure Google would love your Google ID to be your
universal login.
Any company would probably be happy about such a situation.
However,
I'm much more fond of OpenID's idea of a neutral universal
online
identity that no-one owns but you.

The more companies that support it, the better. AOL,
Microsoft,
Livejournal, and dozens of smaller players have agreed that
it's
better to make your customers happy than to coerce them into
giving up
their very identities, and have chosen to make our lives a
bit easier
by adopting OpenID.

Google's services are often very cool and useful, but if
they were
ever to get the idea that their users never need services
from
another company, that would be just stupidly arrogant.

This point is valid - Yes its new and popular - but there is
one more
reason:
The statement "Google has already something like
OpenID" is partly
rubish. It's a "Google Login" - nothing else - and
I think that an
universal (and decentralized) Id/login system is really
needed.
Netvibes (a big portal contender to Google/ig) has also
announced to
use it and others will follow because it makes sense and
Google should
be part of a system like that.
"Dont be evil"

I would like to hear a substantial reason.
What are the weaknesses of OpenID etc.?
