On to the topic, I'll agree with you Zack: I've never
experienced any
extensive outage with Gmail (I'm not talking about POP).
Usually it's
a few minutes. I think once it was a little more than an
hour.

I am continually getting problems with GMail. The technical
problems
and outages are 10x worse that they have added Chat. By the
way, you
point out that Google is 'Beta', it has been for several
years now.

Problems seem to strike different users at different times.
I've not
had many, but we have seen posts of people having a lot and
others
becoming unusable. I would submit a report to Google
through the
contact us link on the help page. The one time I had a
problem for
several days (there was also an internet "war"
going on between L3 and
other Tier I ISPs, so those were probably my real problem),
I sent
such a message. I got no response, but the problems did
clear up a
few days later. I've heard of similar results from people
willing to
try.
I also have noted LESS problems since Chat was added, so
I'm sorry for
your problem, but can't agree that it got worse. I won't
say it
didn't get worse for you, cause I'm not you can can't
see/don't know,
but I can say it hasn't gotten worse for everyone.
I'm not going to point out it's Beta, but I do have an
issue with your
time-scale. GMail was "born" on Apr 1st, 2004.
That's less than 2
years ago, so I'm not sure how you got that it's in Beta
for "several
years now".

I want to point out that , even living in Brazil, I've
NEVER had any
kind of problems with my GMail acounts. I'm a journalist
and PR person;
I invited several journalist friends over to Gmail, because
it makes so
much easier to be in contact - and Chat has only widened
this
perspective.
BTW I do not want to be counted on as one of the
"completelly-in-love-with-gmail" persons; it's
only an acurate
description of my experiences so far.

I've been using Gmail for about 5 months, and have not
experienced
serious problems until this past 10 days, when the down time
has become
terrible. It is, as somebody, I think, already said, 10x
worse than
its ever been. When one relies on gmail as their primiary
email, it
becomes intolerable to have this amount of down time.
Yes, this message is being sent through gmail. I"m
not saying its
always downt, just that it has become undependable. It is
likely to go
down at any time, without warning. In fact, just now, the
message has
come up, "the service is temporarily
unavailable", so I will save this
and hope for a brief window in which to send it.
I know its Beta, but come on.. this has to be the longest
beta test
in the history of the world.

Longest Beta??? not really... ICQ was Beta for at least 5
years that
I'm aware of, probably longer and I'm sure there are
other examples
people could come up with.
I'm not experiencing the same symptoms as you are, so it's
not a
global problem on Gmails part, but perhaps it's affecting
your part of
the world, or people on a particular server. When I *DID*
have that
same problem I reported it to Google through the links in
the help
section. While I did not receive a personallized response,
the
problem did resolve itself within a few days. Report it,
they may not
know they have a problem till someone tells them. That's
what being
in this Beta means, we're responsible to report ANY
problems and
suggestions so they can improve the service.

I disagree... Beta means they want users to report problems,
and they
work to resolve them. M$ would rather you NOT report
problems, cause
then they'd HAVE to admit them and fix them.
Whether you believe it or not, M$ has a larger list of bugs
in their
OS than you or I have ever seen. Many are
"undiscovered bugs",
meaning you and I aren't aware of them. They simply choose
not to
address them until the public discovers them.
Also... Beta means limited release. I know of very few
people who
don't have at least *1* MS branded machine (DIE-HARD MAC
and Unix
fans).
Seriously though, MS does Beta their software, and I'm told
by people
who've been a part of the program, that the group who runs
that part
is receptive to input, but all their OSes are not Beta.

Well, i worked for Compaq and i saw many bugs u are not
suppose to
"disclose".
Is an economic choice.... and some times a security issuse.
