Contacting other gmail users

Two friends have gmail emails.  I can not email these
friends, I
receive a message advising their email addresses are
invalid.  This is
not the case.  I can however receive their email and reply
to them.
Is there a filter or setting that I need to change.

It sounds like you have their e-mail addresses typed
incorrectly.  If
you've received and replied, that would add them to your
contact list.
 Check your contact list and I suspect you'll find two
entries for
your friends, one correct, one wrong.  Delete the wrong one
so it
doesn't get used again.
