Hello,
I have a question about Gmail's labels. I personally believe
that this
concept is not quite finished.
Gmail's labels basically work like tags right? i mean this
is the way
i see it. I can apply one or two labels to one single email
to easily
find it.
But then if I use GMail's label the way I use my tags over
at Flickr,
then one message would have 4 or 5 different tags, right? So
in the
end my GMail inbox would have "at least" 100
different tags for the
thousands of messages! from "holiday",
"Christmas", "present" to
"birthday", "meeting",
"project"... Can you imagine your inbox with
100 different tags? that would largely affect the usability
of the
application!
So to me it sounds like : yeh you can have tags but don't
use them to
much"... in other words... the concept is not really
finished and this
is the reason why I believe GMail should have smart folders
along with
the labels.
What do you think? Have I clearly understood the way labels
should be
used? Did I miss something?

I think you are missing the point. I imagined tags as broad
categories, so it never occurred to me that you could have
hundreds.
The key is to remove labeled messages from the inbox, and
use the
search functionality to find the messages you are interested
in.
At the time I am writing this, I have 30 labels and 47425
conversations. With a good set of labels, starring
important
conversations, and use of the search function, I can find
most
anything within a short time.

I'm with Fuzzy on this. The most tags I put with a conversation is 3 and I usually only use one. I only have around 20 labels total.
The reason that you have to use a lot of tags with Flikr is that they are the only way to search for pictures. With email, you can search in the actual text of the conversation, so you don't have to be nearly as precise about labeling.

I third that... I'm at about 25 labels. Labels should be
more generic
and between multiple labels and searches you get more
specific.

OK the fact that Flickr photos can only be searchable with
tags
because they do not contain text is a good point actually...
did not
think about that !
