Gmail hacked? Un-used email address is getting spam

Well, this is disapointing.  I have an email address that
I've never
used and it is now getting spam at gmail.  What happened?

Probably a dictionary attack. Is the username (the part
before the 
sign) easily guessed or was it used on another domain
before?
