I'm worried I'm overtaxing my recipients' mailboxes!

You could either edit the image, to make it smaller, or compress it and send the compressed file. I wouldn';t worry too much about filling your recipients' mailbox though. GMail will only allow you to send about 8MB of attachments, and I don't know of any email provider that doesn't give that much space.
Another option you have is to upload your images to Picasa Web or Yahoo Photos and let the people you were planning on emailing the images to just go there and save them. This way, all you will have to do is send them a link to your online photo album.

If you have so many emails in them, are not many of them obsolete?
Granted that I probably get much less email than a lot of people it seems that many people get perhaps 100 or more emails per day. I get about 20 to 30 emails.
I store the ones that I believe many be important and then before I delete them, I CUT and PASTE ones that are potentially important into My Documents. When I am quite confident I no longer need them I delete them from My Documents.
I have a brother who seems to archive even more than I do as he quotes me things by CUT and PASTE that I wrote weeks ago. I believe he get a lot of emails.
If that sounds in any way that I am admonishing you for storing emails, I apologize as that is not the intent.

Thanks Nick, I haven't figured out how to compress a file
yet, but it
can't be that hard, right? And anyway, I like the idea of
the online
photo album. I never thought of that, and it would
certainly work
well for me these days.

an alternative I have used over the years is
magickstudio.com, there
you can edit, annotate etc..I use it to reduce the size of
images. you
can use either pixel size or can select half size and do
that till its
the size of a postage stamp.
