Security against brute force attacks?

Hello,

I've looked everywhere, but can't seem to find an answer to
this.
Hopefully someone here will know.

What does gmail do to prevent brute force attempts to figure
out
someone's password? Please tell me gmail will lock an
account after a
certain reasonable number of failed login attempts! Or
perhaps do
something even smarter than that.

I just tried it, and after 3 attempts, it begins to require
a
"captcha" to allow more direct login attempts.
This would make it
very difficult for a script to keep trying, and annoying for
a person
to try.
