Pop-forwarding & the deletion option

I have my account set up to be accessed via POP and there's
an option
under Settings that reads

"When messages are accessed with POP .."  then
there's a drop down
menu.  I have selected the drop-down item "delete
Gmail's copy."

In spite of checking and rechecking this several times,
Gmail never
deletes the messages after they've been accessed via POP. 
They remain
in the Inbox, "unread", good as new.

Ideas?

I don't use POP, so I can't verify your results, but sounds
like a
bug.  Try setting it to another option (like keep in inbox),
save the
settings, then come back in and set it back.  See if that
works.  If
not, I'd report it to Google as a bug.
