Number of characters per line when i reply to a message

When I start typing my reply the line goes on for many
characters to
the point where it can not be read.  It falls off the right
side of
the screen so to speak.  When I click send everything i
typed is there
in one column ready to read.  Have I inadvertently messed up
some
setting?  It only happens when I reply, not when I compose
an original
message.

    Paul, I forgot to explain that if you want to use the method of reducing the size of the screen I mentioned, you have to maneuver the cursor (arrow) onto the edge of the screen carefully and precisely until the full white arrow changes into a two-edged black arrow, indicating that you can move the size of your message either way. - Wolfeman
