Folders in Gmail.

Hi,

We have seen a lot of emails (and requests) in the past regarding the unavailability of folders in Gmail and I think I have stumbled upon something that would pacify people (to a certain extent) who miss folders, but still loves Gmail.

It's a Greasemonkey script that sort of Emulates Folders in Gmail. I have tried the same in Firefox and seems to work (Please see the attached Screen-shot). This is how you go ahead with installation of the script and folder emulation.

  1. You will need to install Greasemonkey for the browser that you are using currently. The link for Firefox extension is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748. Install and restart Firefox.
  2. Install the Script Folders4Gmail (Point your browser to http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/8810). The author of the script has provided an example of to how to setup gmail labels after the script is installed.
  3. If you are using Gmail for your own domain then right-click on the GreaseMonkey Icon in the Status bar of your browser and Select "Manage User Scripts". Add https://mail.google.com/hosted* in the Included Pages (as shown in the Screen-shot attached). I have tried testing this on my gmusers.com ID and It seems to work fine. I tried Sub-folders too and it seems to work OK too (As seen in the Screen-shot, we software engineers love Screen-shots ;)).

The only problem after the installation would be searching mails using Labels as I feel that you will have to provide the complete label name to search for a mail within a "folder". That is... Label:TestFolder1Sub-Folder1Hmmm :(.

Hope you find this little script useful. I apologize for cross posting and in case this is already posted.

Cheers!
Vijay

Those are not  folders.  You are still using labels, but you are just putting them in a folder-like hierarchy thing.  I tried using this before, and I had a lot of problems with it.  First off, it didn't work for me most of the time, I don't know if it was fixed since I used it though.  Also, if you have the "folder" collapsed, it won't tell you if you have any unread messages that have the labels in the "folder" applied.  I find that to be quite annoying since I think that the point of collapsing the labels is so you save space, but whats the point of collapsing them if you just have to expand it again to see if there are unread messages.  Also, to the best of my knowledge, clicking the name of the "folder" does not search all the labels within.  Again, that would be a neat feature that should be there.

Nick, I agree that it's not folders.

I have mentioned the script Emulates Folders (OR Folder like structure using labels). I prefer labels and search facility any day.

Just that there were a lot of people who wants Gmail as well as Folders. This is something that I stumbled upon and I personally don't intend to use it for the simple reason that I don't like to see absurdly long labels.

I have not tested this script extensively, so I am not sure of the pros and cons...

Vijay
