When I first set up my gmail account many moons ago, I
thought I had
claimed the same name as my primary email address (aol.com).
When I
recently purchased tickets, I was told an acknowledgement
would be sent
to my gmail account. Upon trying to sign into that account,
I realized
that I was registered under another name. Gmail tells me
that someone
else has my desired name, but I believe that address is the
original
one I set up a year or more ago. Is there a way to reclaim
that
original name, or at least find out if it's really mine or
not? (I have
sent an email to that account and am awaiting a response.)

Do you remember what the secondary email address for it was?
You could
try the "Forgot my password" link and see how
far that gets you.

How long has it been since you last used it? If the account
is truely
yours that's a big factor. GMail will mark accounts
dormant after 3
months I think (can't find the URL with the exact times in
it)
swer.py?answer=6563&topic=1505>,
and if it remains dormant for 6 months (9 total) it will
delete the
account and recycle the username. If it's been more than 9
months,
someone else may have snatched up the username you once had.

If it's been more than 5 days, and less than 9 months, you
should be
able to reset the password from the "Forgot my
password" link on the
login page. Note: If the account was accessed in the last 5
days, you
cannot reset the password without access to the secondary
e-mail
listed on the account.
