deleting messages while reading them

Is it possible to configure Google mail's Inbox to go on to
the next e-
mail when one is deleted?  At present, when one deletes an
e-mail that
has been read it returns to the Inbox and then the next
e-mail has to
be opened rather than opening automatically.   I realize
that one
might not wish to go on to the next one, but very often I
find it
handy to be able to continue down the list as I am able to
do in
Outlook.
