A different sort of cookie question...

I tried posting this the other day, but it didn't seem to
go
through.

I have a workplace that monitors internet usage, and in the
last
couple of days, it's been brought to my attention that I am
showing
that I am logged in on my gmail account even when I have
quit the
browser. Now, I haven't clicked "sign off", but
simply quit the
browser. When I reopen another browser window to sign in to
gmail, I
am prompted to enter my username and password, as though I
am logged
out. However, I performed an experiment using a second
computer and
another gmail account and discovered that if I do the
following:

*Quit the browser without clicking "sign off"*

I can still see myself as logged on. Yet again, when I open
another
browser window and fire up gmail, I am asked to enter my
username and
password as though I'm actually signed off.

So, my question is gmail secretly running in the background
if I don't
click "sign off"? This might account for the time
usage issues I've
had here at work (it's an asinine policy. If they don't
want people
online, block the whole damn internet. Instead, they rake
you over
the coals if you're online more than X minutes a day-- And X
minutes
seems to change all the time. And doesn't apply to
everyone. Anyway,
I'm just ranting now...).

Any help clearing this up for me would be greatly
appreciated.

you have to sign out of each session...closing the browser
does not do
this..I hope you arent using any public computers and doing
the same
thing. logging on at another pc will not do it either.

I'm aware of that, but this problem is slightly different.
If I close
the window that Gmail is active in, I'm aware that the
session is
maintained, but is any data being transfered between my
computer and
the Gmail servers while the window is closed?

Not unless your browser fails to close completely. I have
this
problem with IE occasionally where it appears to close, but
checking
my task manager will indicate that it's still running.
