When in inbox, or list, view, the field to the left is the
list of
people who have sent mail in that particular thread. If
there is only
one name, you haven't replied. If it has your name, or
"me" in that
list; you have replied. If you're referring to ongoing
threads where
you've gone back and forth, then yes, you'll have to open it
to see
who the last sender was, unless you archive ones you've sent
then
it'll only be in inbox when THEY have responded, so you know
you
weren't the last one.
