    Is the scanned document an image? There are ways to insert them inline into your message in Gmail, but they're generally difficult and a hassle. Instead, I would attach the file (click "Attach a file" under the To: box).


It's also possible to send the message through Outlook. Look at the "POP and forwarding" tab under Gmail's settings.

Thanks for the reply.  I understand the attachment procedure
and have
no problem with it.  However there are occasions where I
need to
insert the scanned document in the text body of the email. 
It is this
problem I am trying to solve.  Normally it is a scanned copy
of an
invoice or bill and contains no pictures other than a
possible
embellishment.
