Can I add Safari 3.0.3 and the letters m, then n to the mix.
I'm
switching to Camino while this blows over, but will be back
on Safari
later, as I prefer it. My best guess, since this seems to be
limited
to gmail and seems so specific, is a rogue programmer at
google with a
grudge, doing a browser detect and being quite annoying to
Safari 3
beta users.

If this is the case, I wish google the best of luck finding
the code
and repairing the damage done. If this is the work of some
malicious
programmer, I hope they are brought to task. I have used
gmail for job
applications in the past and would hate to have missed out
on a good
job because some idiot wants to make a bit of noise.

Uh, no. I would bet my life savings that isn't the case. This is likely just a case of:
  1. Gmail does not fully support Safari (IE and Firefox-based browsers are the only fully supported ones)
  2. Safari 3.0.3 is in beta, which by definition means it probably still has a few problems. Gmail is extraordinary complex and could easily be finding a bug that few other sites would.
  3. If it was a browser detect that intentionally discriminated against Safari, anyone in the world (not just Google) could see the code causing it (as it would have to be client-side Javascript). Someone would have a raised a fit by now, there are a lot of people out there who look at code like that for fun.
No need to look for a conspiracy theory.
