I'm not sure if that is an exact duplicate of the message,
but if it
is it looks like you're missing the first period in
"smtp.gmail.com"

Make sure you have everything set up as described at
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=132
87, including
the port and encryption settings.
