Yes, very true. I did consider them, but leaving the browser
(Firefox,
nonetheless) open is also a painful solution if you don't
have a lot
memory to spare.

Come to think of it, you could use an RSS reader/notifier as
well. You
could have it watch the Gmail Atom feed at
https://mail.
google.com/mail/feed/atom. The only difficulty is
finding
one which can provide the necessary authentication.
