Notification Alert

Is there a way to modify what to show up on the alert or set
it up to
show only an notification icon and not the alert with From,
subject and
part of the body. Let me know.Thanks.

Which alert are you referring to?  Gmail?  Google Alerts? 
Calendar?
or something else?

There don't seem to be many options at all (more for OS X
users, I
suppose, since I think their version supports plugins).  I
was hoping
to find a way to stop the desktop alerts when mail arrived,
but didn't
see anything offering that option.  I like the icon change,
but the
alerts are distracting, I think.

For now, I'm on WinXP.
