Here is current free email users breakdown:

Yahoo Mail : 42.4 %
Hotmail : 22.9 %
Gmail : 2.5 % (little over 2 years in business)

You are making good sense.

Now I realize that I shouldn't have tried the gmail
in the first place.

Glad you are not one of the developer.
Most of the gmail developer attitude seems to be,
"Hi user, With all the PHDs in the world of course we
know what is good for you! you just shut up and use it
or go back to your yahoo mail"

Search department made google a 100 billion dollar company.
All other departments are showing nothing but arrogance.
(google maps & picassa are cool though

Giving 1 (and then 2gb) space way before anyone else dared
to, free
POP and forwarding, and all without flashy image ads - you
call that
arrogance?

Regarding "If you don't like the service, don't use
it", it's not
arrogance, it's a plain statement. For most of us Gmail
works just
fine. The statistics don't matter much, because you can't
compare a
well established email service that has been around for 10
years to
one that still doesn't allow signups at will. We all know
Yahoo mail
has more subscribers - I use it too. Furthermore, keep in
mind that
many ISPs outsource email to Yahoo or MSN. The source of the
report
(Hitwise) doesn't mention if their percentages include
those customers
or not. By the looks of it, they do because they counted
hits on the
subdomain, and outsourced clients still use mail.yahoo.com.

What I don't understand in that "report" is the
maps numbers. It
doesn't make sense to me for people to be still using the
ancient
mapquest when yahoo and google maps have a much better
offering. I
suppose it's because people have been used to it for so
long and don't
look around for alternatives.

Personally, I think it's funny that she is saying how much she doesn't like Gmail via a GOOGLE Group and her GMAIL address.

Almost everyone making these comparisons these days compares
GMail to
the premium version of Yahoo Mail, not the free version.
Free Yahoo
mail does not let you POP, does not let you forward etc.
You get to
pay Yahoo $ for that.

If you don't want a message "threaded" simply
change the subject line
(edit subject) and the message will be separated fro the
thread. Then,
only messagges with the same subject line will be added to
that
conversation. You can just keep using a new subject line if
you like!
I admit, the thing I like most is the threaded conversation
capability.
I also like labels, and the way the contact groups works.
The more I
find out about gmail, the more I like it. I also have found
that there
is usually a way to do what I want.

Interesting responses. Although I love gmail, the
non-reversible
threading devise is a pain. Sadly, there are tons of
responses, yet no
solutions to the problem. It is difficult to find past
email because
of threading, even with a helpful search device. I would
pay a few $ a
month for a more complete gmail service. Subfolders and
drag-and-drop
email filing would be FANTASTIC services. Again, I would
shell out a
few $ (below $5) for those kinds of features.

And make no mistake, Google wants GMAIL to be far more
mainstream than
it has so far become. As recent reports show, all of
Google's services
- aside from the search site - are lagging far beyond Yahoo
and others.
This is disappointing. Yahoo is better with portals
(especially with
their redesign), widgets, and IM. Gmail is overall better,
the Google
calendar is awesome, and other services are great too. But
Google
needs to spend more on marketing.

Sincerely,
Jack

99.9% of us who subscribed to this news group
are gmail cults.

Well. You know how we gmail cult behave. We
won't listen to outsider opinions or facts. All we want
to hear is, "gmail is great, all the world geniuses
want to use gmail, only dumb fools are using yahoo
mail.".

Most here seems to think that any one who
criticizes gmail must be a communist.

I am getting tired of this nonsense. Time for some
introspection.

Yahoo doesn't do free POP or free forward.
Still it is beating gmail by a huge margin.

I am also getting tired of the argument that
gmail is only a beta product. It has been
more than 2 years since gmail has been out.
Is gmail gonna call itself for beta for 10 more years??
Beta is just convenient word to hide behind for
our own incompetence.

2 years is pretty good time to make an impact!
Google search did it.

The Impact firefox is making in this year alone
is amazing.

Don't tell me you can't make an huge impact in
800 days.

Searching works within threads. It will pinpoint the email
that
includes the terms you searched for. If it didn't find it
for you,
perhaps you didn't search for the right terms.

Gmail introduced the flat labels method of organizing your
email. If
you want to label an email with more than 1 descriptor, you
can do it.
Introducing "subfolders" would break the
concept, rendering it
useless. Thinking that you need subfolders indicates that
you are not
using the labels properly. For example, if you need a folder
School
and a subfolder within it named MATH2215, just create those
2 labels
and assign both of them to your email.

I was wondering when someone was going to finally bring this
up, which
also is another point actually.

Leela said that she doesn't like the way it threads
messages, and of
course there is an alternative; POP the mail with an email
client. Her
messages will then be one at a time just like all the
others.

The thing is, I too was confused to begin with. It was a
totally new
concept and took some getting used to. However the more I
use it, the
more I find that it's much better than the others and the
one thing
I've noticed more than anything is else, is the way that
they listen.

I'm hearing about "the attitude" here, but in
truth I've seen them
implement suggestions made and they have listened to
problems
identified.

As for the statistics, I'm very surprised to hear about
this. I don't
know many who do NOT use gmail. Yahoo is glitchy and I have
a number of
problems with it. In fact, I still can't get it to upload a
picture on
my profile page! I've tried for months. Hotmail is just now
trying to
get its act together and if you've tried their new Beta
version lately
you might agree that a snail is faster running a mile than
trying to
open an email at hotmail now.

All in all of all the primary web based FREE email products,
Gmail wins
hands down in my opinion. Let's face it, when they offer
free POP, then
there just simply isn't another alternative.
