Actually, now that I think about it, I think I got annoyed
with
./autogen.sh complaining that all my tools were out of date.
 I didn't
want to overwrite the ones that Apple had provided and
started to
install the new ones separately under /usr/local.

In the end I found it easier to hack the released version of
libgcrypt
rather than continue with the svn version.
