Slideshow Control displays media:thumbnail rather than media:content?

Sorry for the many questions - tonights the night I decided
to
implement with Slideshow control.

I have a lot of photos on my site and the idea is to use
this control
as a slideshow viewer.  So I was surprised to see that the
control
displays my thumbnail images, not the full size images. 
That is, it
appears to show only images in the media:thumbnail
description and
completey ignore the media:content section.

Is this expected behaviour?  What is the right approach to
displaying
the full size images rather than thumbnails?

And last on this topic: its not clear to me if the control
starts the
show as soon as it has the first image retrieved, or whether
it
retrieves all images before display. I'm hoping it starts
immediately
but would like confirmation.
