Giving the sidebar an absolute position would fix it because
it
removes it from the document flow.  What would also fix it
would be to
adjust the left margin of the mainContent div so that it
doesn't have
a left margin of 248px.  In Firefox 2.0.0.11, a setting the
left
margin to 0px and the overflow to hidden provides a narrow
left
sidebar and a full-size right column for main content.
