what is a major certifying authority?

Problem solved.  Comodo (InstantSSL) was able to re-issue my
certificate with an issuer of GTE CyberTrust (instead of
User Trust
Network).  If you have the same solution, contact Comodo and
be
persistent.  It took a couple tries with their support
organization to
find someone that knew how to fix the problem.
