Thread: Google landing page?

Google landing page?

I'm just getting started with google checkout and have a
question....
is it possible at all to skip the google landing page? I
don't mind
my customers seeing that google is involved, but I'd like to
avoid the
"step" of them having to create a google id and
all that nonsense.
I'd like to be able to do it through the API.

I see no way to do that. Is is possible?

Based on my experience, you want the customers to create
Google accounts
because when they come back for other orders, Google
remembers them and the
purchase experience is about as close to Amazon's one-click
as a consumer
might desire. Shopping cart abandonment is a big issue in
the on-line
industry, so anything that makes the experience easier for
the consumer is
to be encouraged. Amazon is hugely successful in part due
to one-click.

One of the issues that I see emerging here is that
developers have issues
that are not related to the consumers' experience but you
never want to
forget that unless the customers come back, you won't have
any business.

Depends on the situation. That's true in the case of
amazon, but many
or most of my customers (for this project) are not repeat
customers...
they're buying construction materials.

So the issue in this case isn't that they need the
one-click
experience, it's that they don't want the extra hassle of
creating
another user id and remembering another password. They just
want to
enter their card and be done with it.

But that doesn't answer the question in any case... I still
need to
know if it's possible, but it doesn't look like it is.

You know, I started thinking about this after I wrote...

Google checkout is actually the antithesis of one-click. On
amazon,
they know my user id and password, so next time I come back
they can
check me out. On my site, I know the user id and password,
but I must
force the user to enter a different one to use the google
checkout.
So the experience is in no way seamless on my site.

But that is precisely why it is worth thinking about: they
are two different
issues. What you want (I would think) is that the consumer,
in general, have
the quickest and best experience in making a purchase on
your site. Look to
the model for this which is clearly Amazon. The fact that
your site might
not be set up to do this only begs the question as to
whether or not the
developers started the site with the consumer in mind or
their own
developmental issues. I hope I am not being too dismissive
here but people
generally want ease of use not more work when it comes to
shopping on-line.
The proof is in the pudding.

There are many misconceptions about how you can use
checkout. It's
not a payment gateway.

Here is what you CAN do:

1) Forward your customer to checkout, where they will give
Google
their payment information and authorize a single payment to
you.
2) Write server-side scripts to act on notifications from
Google about
transaction status.

Here is what you CANNOT do:

1) Collect customer information yourself (including billing
information).
2) Enter and/or use scripts to forward customer billing
information to
checkout yourself
3) Perform any type of recurring billing - if you have a
recurring
charge, customers will have to manually
"re-subscribe" every billing
cycle
4) Suppress email communications between Google and the
customer
5) Avoid having customers go to the Google web site to pay
you.

In a very real sense, Google "owns" your customer
and you are only
entitled to the information about them that Google chooses
to provide
you with, which is only enough information to fulfill the
order. The
customer can even choose to mask their real email address
from you and
provide you with a x...checkout.google.com address, which gets
forwarded to their real email.

In a short answer: No, you can't use GC as a payment gateway

I thought Google had a postback feature on the API of level
2 integration
that allows you to keep some relevant data. As an aside, how
would Google
process a refund query that was initiated by the customer to
the merchant?
Would the merchant refer the customer back to Google and
say, tough luck, I
have no data or what?

Right, so where is the ease of use when I a) have to enter
my login
and password on somesite.com and then have to enter it AGAIN
(or
possibly even a different user ID and/or password) on Google
to
checkout?

That's different than Amazon.
