Easiest way for you is to probably use something like
osCommerce. They
can provide you the account login/password stuff as well as
the Google
Checkout code. While what you describe sounds trivial
(technically),
there is a lot of infrastructure that needs to be in place
to do it
securely and properly. Using a pre-built store such as
osCommerce would
let you focus on your content versus the
administration/management of
users and all the other stuff that goes with it.

Subject: [google-checkout-api-integration] Purchasing
web-based content
with Google Checkout?

I am working on implementing a system for a website which
would allow a
viewer to create an account (standard login/password thing)
and then
allow them to buy items which would grant them (their
account) access to
certain web-based content on the site. However, not having
done anything
like this before, I would appreciate it if some of the more
skilled
people here could provide some guidance.

I was thinking about using Google Checkout for the
transaction system
(the FAQ said that, although it is primarly intended for
tangible goods,
it may be used for intangible ones as well). I was wondering
if anyone
has implemented something like this and how it turned out,
anything to
be weary off etc.

I also have little experience with implementing a
username/password
account system. Would the best way to achieve this be
creating a
database (say MySQL) with the website checking with it
whenever someone
tries to log and access purchasable content, and writing my
own code for
the Google Checkout API (XML I presume) to check off stuff
in the
database instead of shipping physical products? If so, how
would I get
started on this? Or maybe there is some online service (ala
Google
Checkout) that provides this sort of account system that I
could easily
integrate with Google?

Thanks!
