Not really an API question.. Last week I had to deal with
the effects
of a server time-out upon Google Checkout, and when I got
into the
office today, I discovered that it happened again!
Apparently, there
is a three second window of opportunity for a website to
communicate
with Google, and if something goes wrong in that process,
shipping and
taxes (as well as I'm sure more that I'm unaware of)
automatically
defaults, which in my case taxed a Floridian (though I
operate
business in California) and charged only $10 for Next Day
Air via UPS.
So here are my thoughts: most simply, make a default
shipping method
to go along with the default price (like, set to UPS
Ground). Right
now, to deal with this situation, I have removed many
shipping options
from my shop, but that isn't really a long-term solution,
nor is it
very convenient.
My other thought on this topic may not work, but here it is:
a time-
out could force an error, making the customer simply try
again.
"Google didn't get that, please try again" and
then the customer can
click the Google Checkout button again.
This really is a problem, folks. Businesses aren't supposed
to tax
out of state customers (the IRS might have a problem with
that) and my
business has already lost money covering the shipping
charges on that
order last week (and will again on the order that cam in
today).
