xv and googleearth apparently demand different versions of
several
libraries, all of which accompany the googleearth download.
Somehow
these libraries, although bearing the same names as those
already in
existence (and being used by xv), not only are somewhat
different, but
somehow hijack the path so that xv now finds the libraries
contained in
the googleearth subdirectory and finds them wanting. These
libraries are:

libjpeg.so.62
libtiff.so.3
libz.so.1

Google needs them to start, but not to run.

After a bit of nastiness, I found the following to be the
easiest way to
deal with the problem:

(1) Rename the offending files in usr/local/google-earth/ to

renamedlibjpeg.so.62 etc.

(2) Execute one of the following scripts depending on what
you want.

switch2google:
cd /usr/local/google-earth/
cp renamedlibjpeg.so.62 libjpeg.so.62
cp renamedlibtiff.so.3 libtiff.so.3
cp renamedlibz.so.1 libz.so.1

to start googleearth.

(3) After it's finished loading, do:

switch2xv:
cd /usr/local/google-earth
rm -f libjpeg.so.62
rm -f libtiff.so.3
rm -f libz.so.1

which will allow you to use xv for whatever you use it for
even though
you continue to use google earth.

I no longer care why this works this way -- I have a crude
workaround
which isn't all that troublesome. I use xv for general
photo
manipulation and display of tkwallpaper, so it's something I
actually
NEED even though it's old. Picasa is classy but SLOOOOOOOOW
and gimp is
way bigger and more complex than I need for the simple
manipulations I do.

I offer this in case anybody else is tearing his/her hair
out...
