Store data without inline?

Is there a way to store data between reloads of the Google
Homepage,
other than prefs.set which requires inlining?
It's really a problem that a simple 'note-keeping' or
'todo' gadget
cannot work without inlining. Maybe Google should work on
making
dynamic preferences setting more available.

I could use an external server with PHP (and AJAX), but
getting a free
php reliable hosting server is hard (BTW - do you know
one?).
Is there a preferred way to do it, or any function handling
it?
Sharing content with Google Desktop would be great too (and
isn't
possible with prefs.set)
