How do I pass a value in to a gadget?

I want to pass a value into the gadget, what do I need to
put on the
url of the gadget, and then how do I access it within the
gadget code?

I have tried

htttp://johna11.googlepages.com/gadget.xml?pid=23

That seems to syntax ok, but how do I get the value inside
the code????
