Google has released today a new version of the GSA sofware
(version
5.0), which is the first release after 8 months.
See press release (http://
www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/
20071010_gsa5.html) and official blog (http://
googleenterprise.blogspot.com/2007/10/five-years-of-evolutio
n-in-
enterprise.html).
I don't think the actual update files are yet available on
the support
site.
>From the info available so far, it seems that the new
release is
focusing on connectors to acquire more external content.
This is often
perceived as a limitation of the GSA compared to other
entreprise
solutions, and is also a smart move for Google, whose
licensing model
is based on the number of documents indexed... (more
documents=more
money).
It is not obvious yet on whether the connectors are running
directly
inside a GSA (onboard connectors), or still require a
separate server
for some code to run. If so, this wouldn't be such a big
step forward
or difference from what was already available.
Also, Google has created an entreprise lab (http://www.google.com/
enterprise/labs/), with some examples of code available to
enhance the
user experience. However, looks like most of those examples
require an
external Apache/Php/MySQL environment to run, so not too
much related
to the GSA itself, and moving away from a turnkey,
"easy to deploy",
self-contained solution (Google's target customers are not
probably
companies with internal development expertise on php and
other
scripting languages...)
Installing the new release will surely tell us more, and we
will also
see if any of the suggestions made by the customers, on this
group or
elsewhere, have been taken into account.
Please share your opinions.

i am definately NOT a fan of having to use the 4.x gsa + a
windows
server with iis in order to use the access connectors. i'm
glad to see
the 5.x release and cannot wait to get my hands on it!

I don't know how everyone else fared, but the 5.0 update
failed on
both of my GSAs. One failed in the firmware update and the
other
failed in the software update. I followed all the
procedures in the
update how-to and I pasted the file URL into each device to
let it
take care of the procedure automatically.
Both devices are still serving search but I can't log on to
the admin
console of one of them, and the other reports at least 2
RAID HDD
errors. Scary stuff. Google's been logging on remotely for
2 days
trying to fix it.

My upgrade worked but like you I my GSA reported at least 2 RAID HDD errors following the system upgrade. I went ahead with the software upgrade anyway and the RAID errors miraculously went away. My gut feel is that there was never any disk problems at all as it all seemed a bit of a coincidence.
Anyone else notice the same?
Good luck getting the problems resolved. Colin.

I also received the same error after upgrading the system.
It went
away after updating the software though. My updates went
great. No
problems at all.

We don't have any use for connectors. Is there anything else
that
would prompt an upgrade? I looked for a "new
features" document but
haven't come across it yet. I also attended the webinair but
it seemed
rather fluffy to me.
I think it is ridiculous that we can't utilize the built in
Apache/Php/
MySQL environment on the GSA to load the custom lab code. Of
course, I
would also like to simply be able to edit the host file!
So, bottom line, is there any reason to upgrade if we aren't
in need
of the connectors?
