Very cool. I want it, I want
it, I want it. I definitely think the fios setup is the wave of the
future. Beaming MBs of data 22,000 miles up into space and bouncing it
back down is just not an efficient setup. As the fiber infrastructure
grows, I think it will be the delivery medium of choice. Light rocks
over electricity anyway. It's pretty hard to interfere with light, and
the bandwidth potential beats satellite/cable hands down.
FYI, I get all of my services packaged with Qwest, the same way you do
with Verizon. I get discounts based on the number of services I have
with them. Even my DirecTV is discounted a few bucks over what I would
pat DirecTV directly. It's pretty cool having all the services on the
same bill. And I can log in to my account and see any details I want
to see on any portion of the bill (I'm sure you can too).

I've had issues with my internet being intermittent but the Verizon
Tech Support people have been working diligently with me to find the
problem. I seem to be the exception to the rule in this area since
everyone else I know with FIOS internet absolutely loves it.
My TV service has been great. I only interface with FIOS through my
S3 Tivo but I have their set-top boxes elsewhere in the house,
including one of the HD boxes. If you're considering a HD-DVR then
forget about their DVR. They use the Motorola QIP6416 and it's a
POS from what I've seen. It only supports one IR codeset so you
can't have more than one of them in the same room. It also only has
a 160GB drive, which is an absolute joke when it somes to recording
HDTV.
The picture quality is definitely better than DirecTV's mpeg2
offerings. I haven't seen the latest mpeg4 HD channels to compare
it against.
Aside from the usual growing pains when switching to a different
service provider (it took me 7 months to get my long distance set up
properly), I've enjoyed the transition. I especially like the fact
that I get my phone, internet, TV, and wireless phone service
consolidated into a single bill. I already had Verizon for wireless
and local phone service. When I combined the internet and TV into
the package I got a slight discount and unlimited long distance was
included at no extra charge. My TV bill is comparable to DirecTV
with the same package and features but the better picture quality
makes it even sweeter.
