Hmmm. We're getting there.
But for the last year or two, I've been trying to find an app that will
transcode HD mpeg2 files into the latest and greatest mp4 (h.264) or
WinMedia (I forget what they call the open standard version, VS-1 or
sumpin), that are used on store bought HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs. It's
been over 6 months since I tried, but I couldn't find anything that
would transcode HD content reliably.
My goal is to find an app to transcode to the compression high enough
to fit a movie on a DVD disc (cheap), and find a player that will play
a DVD format disc, but can decode the high compression HD content, and
deliver it in HD (I think the new Sigma codec chip can do this, but all
the popular media players and even the high end ones, based on the
older chip can't keep up). I figure they're both just around the
corner now.

There's a method for authoring HD content to HD-DVD using your
existing DVD burner and standard recordable DVDs. You need a copy
of Ulead DVD Movie Factory 5 or 6, VideoReDo, and a couple of
freeware apps. The resulting DVDs will play back in HD on any HD-
DVD player. The only downside is that you're limited to about 30-60
minutes per DVD so multiple discs are required. You can read about
the process here:

I have all six of the Star Wars movies and the entire Lord of the
Rings trilogy in HD as well as dozens of other HD movies. The
Toshiba HD-DVD players have dropped considerably in price ($200-300)
and the X-Box 360 HD-DVD drive is only $179 (works great on my HTPC).

Ok, thanks. I went ahead and bought the svcd2dvd. I know I tried
the
hdtv2dvd some years ago. I'll give that another try as well.

DVDStyler will not work directly with HD content. For making DVD
from
HD content I've found 2 choices from the same company. The
resulting
quality is excellent:
1. HDTV2DVD - http://www.svcd2dvd.com/HDTV2DVD/default.aspx
this is
free, but it is limited to 1 title. It automatically
changes the
resolution and bitrate to fit on a single DVD.
2. SVCD2DVD - http://www.svcd2dvd.com/ this normally costs 20
British pounds ($40), but is now selling for a special
price of
1 pound ($2). I paid full price for it and it was well
worth it.
It allows you to build DVD with menus and multiple titles.
I
used it to make DVDs from the Planet Earth series on
Discovery
HD. I could put 3 to 4 edited episodes on one DVD and
still have
very good DVD quality complete with DD 5.1 sound. I
recommend
getting the full program even at the regular price but for
$2
it's a steal. The program includes DVD authoring
capability but
you can take the converted files and use another authoring
program like DVDStyler if you want. Good luck.

Re: [hdtivo] Re: Extracting and converrting
I bought VideoRedo a couple years ago too. It's the best app
I've
found for editing out commercials and such. Re DVDStyler, how
has it
done for you in handling HD content? I've really not gotten
satisfactory results putting HD content onto DVD.
Professionally made
DVD movies look quite good and with HD content to work with, I
feel I
should be able to get at least as good as those. But haven't
done
so. How about you?

It is extremely simple to configure TySuiteJ to extract and
convert
using tytompg. If I remember correctly all you need to do is
set the
path to tytompg.exe in the application.properties file and then
press
the "external" button in the GUI. You also need to set the
download
directory. I have used TyTools for years and think it is a
great
application. However after trying TySuiteJ for a few months I
find it
much easier to use. It is strictly a personal preference. One
advantage of TyTools is that you can do editing and DVD
authoring all
in the same application. When I use TySuiteJ for
extraction/conversion I use VideoRedo for editing and DVDStyler
for
authoring. For those who don't know about VideoRedo, it is a
fantastic mpeg editor and it does a great job of repairing
various
problems with mpeg files.
