There's a method for authoring HD content to HD-DVD using your
existing DVD burner and standard recordable DVDs. You need a copy
of Ulead DVD Movie Factory 5 or 6, VideoReDo, and a couple of
freeware apps. The resulting DVDs will play back in HD on any HD-
DVD player. The only downside is that you're limited to about 30-60
minutes per DVD so multiple discs are required. You can read about
the process here:

I have all six of the Star Wars movies and the entire Lord of the
Rings trilogy in HD as well as dozens of other HD movies. The
Toshiba HD-DVD players have dropped considerably in price ($200-300)
and the X-Box 360 HD-DVD drive is only $179 (works great on my HTPC).

Hmmm. ; We're getting there. But for the last year or two, I've been trying to find an app that will transcode HD mpeg2 files into the latest and greatest mp4 (h.264) or WinMedia (I forget what they call the open standard version, VS-1 or sumpin), that are used on store bought HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs. It's been over 6 months since I tried, but I couldn't find anything that would transcode HD content reliably.

My goal is to find an app to transcode to the compression high enough to fit a movie on a DVD disc (cheap), and find a player that will play a DVD format disc, but can decode the high compression HD content, and deliver it in HD (I think the new Sigma codec chip can do this, but all the popular media players and even the high end ones, based on the older chip can't keep up). I figure they're both just around the corner now.

DVDStyler will not work directly with HD content. For making DVD

from

HD content I've found 2 choices from the same company. The

resulting

quality is excellent:

   1. HDTV2DVD - http://www.svcd2dvd.com/HDTV2DVD/default.aspx

this is

free, but it is limited to 1 title. It automatically

changes the

resolution and bitrate to fit on a single DVD.
   2. SVCD2DVD - http://www.svcd2dvd.com/ this normally costs 20
British pounds ($40), but is now selling for a special

price of

1 pound ($2). I paid full price for it and it was well

I

used it to make DVDs from the Planet Earth series on

Discovery

HD. I could put 3 to 4 edited episodes on one DVD and

it's a steal. The program includes DVD authoring

capability but

you can take the converted files and use another authoring

program like DVDStyler if you want. Good luck.
