Hi Michael:

Your question:

If you just purchase SD service from DTV, I am assuming that as long as you pay your $4.99 additional receiver fee for your HR10-250, that you can TiVO all of your OTA HD and SD channels; is that correct?

Yes, that's correct. From a DTV billing standpoint, my HR10-250 costs me the same each month as an SD Tivo box would.

It's just that once MPEG-2 is gone, my HR10-250 is no different than the older SD TiVOs that I continue to use on our ancillary TVs.

The only difference is that the HR10-250 can still receive OTA HD. That's very important if you use that feature, but of course it's useless if you don't connect an OTA antenna.

Bruce:

Good 2 cents: I also use my OTA, as DTV still does not offer our two PBS Channels (28 & 50) in HD, but I made sure that all of my MPEG4 receivers, including the latest that was a replacement for a HR10-250 that went bad, were HR20 (and not HR21's), so that I continue to have OTA.

However, in our case, we love the HD channels offerings from DTV, including all the movie channels, like MGM-HD, HD-Net Movies, UHD, etc.

Hey All:

Don't forget OTA channels. I use my HR10-250 as my primary TV viewing device. I don't have DTV's HD service at all, just the Total Choice Plus SD package. I get all my HD OTA for free. My HR10-250 works great for this. Sure, I would to have all the new channels that DTV has added in HD, but I love the Tivo software and all the great "upgrades" available from the fantastic Tivo developers community. I really hope for a miracle. I hope that DTV will get back together with Tivo and create a new Tivo-based, DirecTV DVR.

Just my Two Cents,
Bruce Dixon

Bruce: Thanks for the clarification. That's good to know about the OTA continuing capability.

Actually I can see Mt. Wilson (and the antennas) from my upstairs bathroom window, so I put a Winegard bat-wing antenna up on the roof for OTA We still don't get 28-1 or 50-1 PBS-HD here in LA from DirecTV (or 4-4, which is a 24/7 local news channel from the local NBC affiliate, and is well worth watching at times; Time-Warner cable carries it now).

One of my HR10-250 bit the dust, and with my protection plan, they replaced it with a HR20-700 (I had to fight like crazy, to keep them from replacing it with a HR21 non-OTA model). The Tech had to come out because only one HD satellite was coming in. As I suspected the original diplexer on the roof was interfering, so he removed it.

I have a direct connect coax from the bat-wing to the main TV in the TV room, so no problem there. For the other OTA's I'm gonna pickup a couple of RCA ANT-111's from Best Buy down the block ($9.95 - small loop for UHF; I don't install the VHF rabbit ears, and it is not very obtrusive). I took one to Montana with me so that my in-laws could pickup digital channels, and it worked like a charm.
