Thread: oggfformat plugin

Hallo!

I am trying to get ogg over rtsp working and I don't know
what to try
ATM (helix-player 1.0.8).

I installed the oggfformat plugin in the helix DNA server
(compiled
version 11_0_STABLE, also tried 11_1).
Everything is loading fine, it detects the ogg plugin.

But when I try to play the stream over rtsp, e.g.
helix-player rtsp://localhost/test.ogg
then I cannot play the stream:
in the status bar the player says that it is buffering
(always 0%) and
it shows the correct length of the file, but it can't be
played
(and there are no errors in the logs of the server - same
problem also
with realplayer10)

It is very strange, because I searched a lot in the web and
I didn't
find anything, which would it say in a clear way, if rtsp
streaming with
ogg is possible with helix server + client - so a clear
answer would be
very much appreciated !

Many thanks,
LG
Georg

I would redirect your question to the server-dev or xiph-dev
mailing
lists. You can sign up for both on the Helix site.

Myself, I have never tried to stream ogg over RTSP, I don't
know any
reason you couldn't though.

thanks - I have done that now.

The strange thing is, that all question about ogg in the
archives are
unanswered ... also my previous ones (so thanks for your
answer ;)

I would be really happy if someone could at least say a
simple no or yes
(and if yes, maybe which plugins I need !)

Many thanks,
LG

We will see whats gets answered on the other lists. However,
the big problem
is not a lot of people have done OGG streaming so they
really don't know.
Conceptually, if the OGG plugins were written the same way
as our other
datatype plugins (with the fileformats and renderers) then
they should work
the same way and stream just fine. I assume they were, but
just don't know.
I know they work fine for local playback.

You might also make sure you try lots of different content,
sometimes it is
just one file or files created the same way that can cause
the problem, in
that case it is just a bug for that one file type while the
rest of the OGG
files will play fine.

It would also be helpful if you could run
wireshark(ethereal) and grab a
TCP dump of the communication between your client and
server. That would
give us a very good idea of where the problem is. Please
post that and
any other follow up information to the xiph/server lists.

It's not something I'm aware of anybody getting working.
Early
versions of the ogg file format plug-in wouldn't work in the
server
because they didn't correctly handle the async file system
interface. It's much less likely to actually get async
behavior on
the client so it worked there, mostly.

Aaron's the maintainer of the ogg stuff and he's cleaned
things up
significantly but I doubt he's tried the server.

This should work, nothing intrinsic to prevent it and it's
the design
of the system that the client and server share the file
system and
file format plug-ins so that if you can play something
locally you
can stream it. Reality is that there are any number of
little things
that you can do that will cause problems with streaming a
data type.

You should only need the ogg file format plug-in on the
server (plus
the standard plugins on the server like the local file
system) and
the vorbus renderer on the client.

I'd insert some logging on the server side to insure that
when run in
the server it goes through all of the right steps - loads
the right
file format plug-in, gets the file and stream headers and
requests
packets. If all that is happening and you can see the full
RTSP
conversation (OPTIONS, DESCRIBE, SETUP, PLAY) and RDT
packets (this
will be the default data transport used) via a network trace
(tcpdump
/ ethereal / etc.) then I'd look to the client and see how
things are
going. In the client you need to check that the renderer is
getting
loaded, getting the stream header, correctly unpacking it,
and
getting OnPacket calls. As you go through that process we
should be
able to help you get things working. This should be no more
than a few days.
